Patient guide

Crowns & bridges, explained simply

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap or covering for an existing tooth that makes it stronger, allowing the tooth to function and look good for many years to come. Crowns can be made from porcelain, zirconia, gold alloy or a combination of porcelain and metal.

When is a crown recommended?

  • Broken, cracked or badly decayed teeth
  • After root canal treatment, when the tooth is heavily weakened internally
  • To cover stained or badly shaped teeth

The three types of dental bridges

  • Traditional bridge — crowns on both natural teeth either side of the gap, with a false tooth (pontic) in between.
  • Cantilever bridge — a crown on only one side, with the pontic extending across the gap. Used when there's a natural tooth on only one side.
  • Implant-supported bridge — rests on dental implants instead of natural teeth. Used when three or more teeth in a row are missing.

The process

How it works

Crown and bridge treatment at Annerley Dental takes place across two appointments — not in a single day.

  1. 01

    First appointment

We examine the tooth, prepare it for the crown or bridge and take a digital scan. A temporary crown or bridge is fitted to protect the tooth while you wait.

  2. 02

    Crafted by a dental laboratory

Your permanent crown or bridge is custom made by a dental laboratory. This typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.

  3. 03

    Second appointment & fitting

The temporary is removed under local anaesthetic and your permanent crown or bridge is fitted with dental adhesive.
